Aloha! My name is Lani and I am the main photographer with Haute Creatures. I live on Oahu on the North Shore, with my husband and a couple cute creatures. I specialize in portrait photography of both pets and people. I'd have to say animals are my "pet" favorite. I have always felt an affinity for creatures of all kinds and am one of those people who just "talks to the animals". Every creature, no matter the species, has a unique spirit all it's own. I aspire to truly capture the heart and the personality of the animals I photograph. I have always said, after a shoot, I feel a bit as though I have fallen in love with my subjects. Being able to make a quick and intuitive emotional connection, is especially important when working with animals. I hope that reflects in my images.
To date I have well over a thousand pet photo shoots under my belt. I have heard that I have a "knack" working animals especially dogs. It truly is a labor of love.
“When animals express their feelings they pour out like water from a spout. Animals' emotions are raw, unfiltered, and uncontrolled. Their joy is the purest and most contagious of joys and their grief the deepest and most devastating. Their passions bring us to our knees in delight and sorrow.”
― Marc Bekoff, The Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow, and Empathy - and Why They Matter
Lani has a had a diverse career, yet her background has been in both art and medicine. Although she was born and raised in Florida, her father grew up in Waialua, hence her Hawaiian name. She came back on vacationing 2010 and never left . "I just felt home.", she has said about her 6,000 mile move. When you are home you just "know". She went back to Florida, sold all her large belongings (except her camera) and packed her bags. Now she lives just steps away from her fathers childhood home.
At a young age she showed her Champion Basenji in dog shows across Florida.
In 1993 she attended the Art Institute for Video and Film Production. She has worked in Entertainment industry as both a stylist and Photograher's assistant.
In 2000 she returned to college and recieved her degree in Nuclear Medicine and went on to run the Nuclear Medicine Department in Coral Gables Hospital in Miami Florida. Although she enjoyed patient care and radiologic imaging, her true passion has always been art, film and photography.
In her spare time, she worked doing portfolio work for South Florida models, musicains and entertainers. Soon, she built a business that overtook her career in health and in 2006 she was able to resign her position and pursue her passion of photography full time. In 2007 she worked as a photographer's apprentice for an aclaimed fashion photographer in New York City. She believes that experience helped her take her photography to the next level.
Lani's other hobbies include painting and in 2009 an exhibition of her art was shown at Gab Art Gallery at Art Walk Miami. Her art work has been featured in national publications and has garnered international media attention.
Since moving to Hawaii, she has worked freelance with her photography company LoMa Photography and shortly after arriving, she was contracted by a Vendor to work in local Petco's doing Pet Photograhy. That was it. She felt that she has found her calling. In 2013 she has partnered with the company directly to do weekly Photo Events in store.
Lani volunteers her services for the Oahu SPCA photographing many of their adoptable dogs.
Lani is a certified dog trainer as well and has a certificate in working with shelter dogs.
She enjoys working with people and their pets and giving them a lasting memory of the creatures that bring them so much love and joy in their lives. Lani aspires to bring pet owners not only a fun and enjoyable experience but capture the personality of their pets and the unique beauty and personality of each animal and their people.
Although she still retains her medical license, she hopes that she will be able to continue to work in the genre of Pet Photography and she feels both honored and grateful that people enjoy what she is able to give them.
